Let’s celebrate… National Swedish Day

June is just around the corner and with it come many important celebrations in Sweden. The Swedes love to party and June provides plenty of opportunities for it!

On June 6th Sweden celebrates the election of the nation’s founding father, Gustav Vasa, which took place on June 6th, 1523. This date was originally svenska flaggens dag or Swedish flag day. Only as early as in 1983 it became the National Day of Sweden but it wasn’t until 2005 that it was officially declared a public holiday. In recent years, the celebration of Sweden’s National Day has become more and more popular and you will find Swedish flags everywhere, street parties and a celebratory mood in the air.

As it is traditional in Sweden, you can head to a park and there will be something going on. Local politicians and well known citizens will give speeches about regional achievements, the national anthem is sung and sometimes you can even see the King and Queen celebrating alongside everyone else!
